    remember her name

(lyrics: Bergmann, music: Bergmann/Susann Richter) Her first breath Is drawn through a cigarette Her first drink Last night’s scotch Just to wet her cracked lips She looks at the man beside her Lying in the bed She doesn’t know his name She only hopes he’s not dead She feels like Marianne Faithfull Marianne Faithfull She hopes at the end of the day Someone remembers her name She goes out for some late afternoon work Down in Times Square Maybe she’ll meet Steven Tyler On a double dare Turning tricks in a theater She’s a creature In her own double feature She feels like Marianne Faithfull Marianne Faithfull She hopes at the end of the this day Someone remembers her name At the end of the day Remember her name I do It’s Marianne Faithfull Marianne Faithfull Marianne Faithfull Marianne Faithfull On a good day Or a bad day

    message from paul

(Bergmann) I really love your long blonde hair You know I love the way you stare Would you still take me back if I’m sent home from there If I mistake him for someone who could ever care I got my message from Paul It could mean nothing at all I got my message from Paul It could mean nothing at all Bells keep ringing in my ears A blue light snaps from eye to eye I was hoping you felt the same Or have I just gone Insane I got my message from Paul Like a New Testament call Like walking down the Damascus Road Under some kind of heavy load Bells keep ringing in my ears A blue light snaps from eye to eye I was hoping you felt the same Or have I just gone insane I got my message from Paul I got my message from Paul It could mean nothing at all Could it be better than watching your long hair fall

    faithlessly yours

(Bergmann) God’s got an answer in that jukebox I pick the wrong song every time I know my song is in that jukebox And I’ve been suckered for the last time How could I be so silly How could I be faithlessly yours God hid an answer in her body I’ve been in the wrong room for so long I found no question in her body I’m in the room where I belong How could I be so silly How could I be faithlessly yours Now that the evidence is in Now that the evidence is in God placed an ad in her paper A cryptic clue without a crossword How could I have known she worked that paper The sweetest sound the world has heard How could I be so silly How could I be faithlessly yours

    crackin’ up

(Bergmann) Who is it up there tonight Is that you in the spotlight Whose voice is coming out of that face Is that you or am I viewing tape Crackin’ Up Crackin’ Up Who are you trying to imitate Stop lying to me you’re tempting fate I’ve never been one who’s prone to violence But I’ve been keeping you under serveillance Crackin’ Up Crackin’ Up You’re just a memory that makes me go astray You’re just a memory that makes me go astray Crackin’ Up Crackin’ Up

    if she could sing

(Bergmann) If she could sing I wonder what she’d say Would she do as I’ve done And put me on display Use me for fun As I have done As I have done She’d make me shudder and run If she could sing Just like me Would she bring Heartache and misery Throw me to the Huns As I have done As I have done She’d make me shudder and run Maybe there is something someone Could have said or done To change my mind I don’t think so this time When she finds her voice I’ll listen For a clue to what was missing When I placed the emphasis On mine If she could sing I wonder what she’d say If she could sing Just like me She would call me down She would call me down She would call me down She would call me down

    baby needs oil

(lyrics: Bergmann, music: Bergmann/Ray Fulber) I’ve uncovered an unearthly delight TV battles in my desert night A superbowl of candy missles in flight Tell me why are all the newsmen white My baby needs oil She’s been drinking like it’s going out of style My baby’s love’s on the boil She’s found a new land to soil I’ve uncovered an unearthly delight A million cars filled up on Exxon light My baby’s engine’s all rusted up tight She wants it every night My baby needs oil She’s been drinking like it’s going out of style My baby’s love’s on the boil She’s found a new land to soil Boys and girls sleep in my desert night A lover’s moon hangs in ghastly pale light Soldier’s wives sleep with Elvis tonight I’m just trying to demystify My baby needs oil She’s been drinking like it’s going out of style My baby’s love’s on the boil She’s found a new land to soil

    I can’t change this world

(lyrics: Bergmann, music: Bergmann/Susann Richter) January 15, 1991… I feel like gettin’ down on my knees and prayin’… I’m walkin’ straight to my lover… In the east end they’re comin’ down… I’ve made a big decision towards the other. Walking through Japantown… Watching bums steal fruit from sidewalk stands… Without ever getting caught. I’m thinking about what Knowlton Nash said on the National News… About some war correspondent… Talking from the front… The thrill of getting shot at and missed… Me, I’m supposed to be writing a hit. I can’t change this world It’s too dangerous for all the boys and girls All the creeps and the jerks that pass me and harass me… They think I’ve got something… Something more… Something to give them… I blame them. I put my ear to the ground and listen fro the sound of falling change… Get our my walker to look for a transfer to get out of range of people hating people for all weird reasons… Around the world they throw toys like an angry little brother in a sandbox… With the hatred of an unrequited lover… Or an envious kid sister. I can’t change this world It’s too dangerous for all the boys and girls Sit around all day just waiting for something clever to say… I’m losing my grip on this pen and feel like searching for my syringe again… Makes me hate my own song. I can’t change this world It’s too dangerous for all the boys and girls I can’t change this world It’s too dangerous for all the boys and girls I can’t change this world

    ruin my life

(Bergmann) Ruin my life Open my eyes to the broad daylight Take me home Get me to bed by midnight Ruin my life Open my eyes to the broad daylight Take me home Keep me safe and warm Do what you like Unless your freedom is the price Take me home Keep me from all harm You say that I can do what I want Hey hey I’m not that strong You say that I don’t get it I’m ready to admit it That I can’t shake it off Ruin my life Hold your nose When I come back in a week in somebody’s clothes Smell this rose Keep me from an overdose Make me hope Make me hope I die when I get old Take my drugs And throw ’em out the window Change my bed, change my head Everything was going wrong until now Take every promise I’ve ever broken Turn them into a vow Is this ring really dipped In a thousand drinks I’d give it all up Just to sink inside her experience Ruin my life

    god’s little gift

(lyrics: Bergmann/William Scherk, music: Bergmann) A neurotic old romance Is claiming young men No amount of destruction Will give you land Return to the holy land Let’s see what you’ve planned What do the chosen few Choose for you Soon we’ll be a page in your history But we will never meet again You think you’re God’s little gift to the world God’s little gift to the world We’re making advances Calling you up for national gain No amount of seduction Will ease the pain You’;ll never get much from me There’s just enough to go around You think you’re God’s little gift to the world God’s little gift to the world Just like a girl who screams in your ear With the secret of the year Here’s an army to fear They think they’re god’s little gift to the world God’s little gift to the world

Most highly recommended.” – Jim Brown, from the West Coast Music Review. Says Randy: “There are a lot of retrospective songs on Any Road. I never really did commentary songs before. Like, in “Fifteen Minutes of Fame,” I’m angry. In “Vanishing Heroes,” I’m in bewilderment. I’m asking, where are all the heroes? Then there is this wonderful retrospective look back at growing up in Winnipeg, which is both versions of “Prarie Town,” slow and fast. I’ve had musicians come up to me and say, ‘That is the ultimate Canadian song for any musician from the sixties and seventies.’ It tells everything. From learning to drive in the snow, going from coast to coast… There are some lines in there that I don’t even know how I wrote them… it was a fun, great album to record — very satisfying for me as far as a personal statement and my first step out on my own after many, many years.”

Jerome James Kingston (Voice) Don Harrison (Guitar) Don Short (Drums) Don Binns (Bass) wikipedia.org/wiki/Sons_of_Freedom_(band) Sons of Freedom were a Canadian alternative rock band of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band, consisting of vocalist James Newton, guitarist Don Harrison, bassist Don Binns and drummer Don Short, formed in 1987 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The band took their name from the Sons of Freedom, a controversial Doukhobor activist group first in Saskatchewan and later in British Columbia in the first half of the 20th century. Their self-titled 1988 debut album was emblazoned with a prominent slogan from Canadian social justice activist Nellie McClung, Never retract, never retreat, never apologise…get the thing done and let them howl. The band’s 1991 album Gump debuted on the Canadian campus radio charts (see Chart) at #1, ahead of Nirvana’s Nevermind, which debuted the same week at #2. The band broke up in 1993, although they briefly reunited in 1995 to tour in support of a rarities compilation, Tex. Binns, Short and Harrison subsequently joined with Lee Aaron in the band 2preciious. In 2008, Jim Newton took a new project called Rat Silo. The band currently includes Don Binns (bass), Finn Manniche (guitar), Dave Osborne (keyboards) and Sean Stubbs (drums). ********* http://apoxonrox.blogspot.com/2007_02_11_archive.html Biography: Sons of Freedom were THE SHIT. A monstrous rhythm section, one of Canada’s finest guitarists in Don Harrison, and a wonderfully eccentric singer/songwriter… a total rock package. Sons of Freedom come from Vancouver, Canada. Singer, lyricist, guitarist and eccentric NEWTON was introduced to kill-on- command rhythm section of BINNS & SHORT by HARRISON, rhythm guitarist without peer in Canada. And thus begun an unholy marriage, that took place in the boiler room of an underground parking lot. This was 1987 and there was only one way to make your presence felt, so the smaller local clubs were subjected to a series of infrequent but punishing shows. The band took their name from the Sons of Freedom, a controversial Doukhobor activist group in Saskatchewan in the early 1900s. In order to achieve their signature sound, the Sons played their instruments at an unconscionable volume, rendering even the hardiest club-goers damn near insensate. Word spread quickly around the local music cognoscenti that there was something incredibly heavy, but totally tuneful crawling up from the gutter. Soon the band got it on tape. Their self-titled 1988 debut album was emblazoned with a prominent slogan from Canadian social justice activist Nellie McClung, Never retract, never retreat, never apologize…get the thing done and let them howl. In 1988, when they released their debut CD, it was hailed as a brilliant monolithic slab of artful hard rock; ahead of it’s time. The band’s 1991 album Gump debuted on the Canadian campus radio charts (see Chart) at #1, ahead of Nirvana’s Nevermind, which debuted the same week at #2. Unfortunately, like so many other fine bands, disillusionment with the music industry machinery set in and the band slowly began to lose their focus until its demise in 1993. Sons of Freedom reformed for a brief tour, only to retire for good in 1996.

    Moon at Noon

Where does the time go, when it’s just draggin’ on / And how come your arrival’s just a line up gettin’ long / Maybe you’re not coming, and where would that put me / Somewhere in the middle of a daydramin’ sea. Chorus: Missing the attraction / By-passing satisfaction / Pining for the moon in the middle of the afternoon. Pulling out my hair won’t make me more aware / And screamin’ out my lungs won’t make somebody care / Sticking pins in voodoo dolls might help it go away / But how much time’s been wasted already in this day? Chorus. So I’ll crack a cold one and keep dreamin’ on / Missing every moment until they are all gone / I can almost hear the angels breaking into song / Someday they’ll bury me, but I’ve been buried all along. Chorus.

    Real

You came along on the morning ship, but failed to rescue me / Just as you were about to step off the captain veered back out to sea / Now I’m standing at the edge of the dock saying… Chorus: But it was real / Real. The man in the lighthouse shouts real means forever, but how can he really say / Birth, death, death, birth, never seem to go away / Now I’m standing here on the edge of the dock, the ocean don’t seem like it cares to talk… Chorus / Follow the gull on the trail of a new mate / It never forgets just to participate / Na na na. You came along on the morning ship, but failed to rescue me / Just as you were about to step off the captain veered back out to sea / Now I’m standing at the edge of the dock, one thing to do, turn around and walk… Chorus: But it was real (so what?) / Real (big deal) / Real (now it’s all gone) / Real (time to move on) / Real.

    Angel from Montgomery

I am an old woman, named after my mother / My old man is another child that’s grown old / If dreams were lightning, thunder were desire, this old house would’a burnt down a long time ago. Chorus: Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery / Make me a poster of an old rodeo / Just give me one thing that I can hold on to / To believe in this living is just a hard way to go. When I was a young cowgirl, well I had me a cowboy / He weren’t much to look at, just a free rambling man / But that was a long time, and no matter how I try, the years just flow by like a broken down dam. Chorus. There’s flies in the kitchen, I can here them there a buzzin’, and I ain’t done nothing since I woke up today / How the hell can a person go to work in the mornin’, come home in the evening and have nothin’ to say? Chorus…

    One Thought Too Long

Just when ya think that ya got it (vrrrrrrrrmm) / Like a semi goin’ the other way / Just when ya think that ya got it (pffffftchk) / It blows up in your face / There’s nobody home, the lights aren’t even on / You find it hard to remember, beauty dies one thought too long. There’s so much to consider now / What once never needed to be fed / You’re feelin’ more like a lizard now / But for get the tail, if only you could grow a new head. Just when you think that ya got it…

    Like Yesterday

The drummer downstairs, he don’t get any sleep / The ceiling boughs under a mournful beat / Tears are running down the wall: boiling waterfall / No rest for the drummer tonight, unless a broken heart guitar takes flight / Nothing goes the way it did like yesterday. Chorus: First you’re up and then you’re down / Then you’re inside spinnin’ round / You can’t cut pain with a knife / But there are moments in your life you see through misty eyes / Cry. The drummer puts a stick right through a brand new skin / But what can clear the air in the room above him / Death seems like an end, the bitter taking of a friend / If he can he’ll live again / Head space from then and when / Cry. Chorus / Nothing goes the way it did like yesterday.

    Separate

I woke to find you dreaming / You were pounding on a pillow / You were knockin’ on a door / I sat up and watched you, wondering was that me you were calling for. I woke to find you dreamin’ / You were pounding on a pillow / You were knockin’ on a door / I sat up and watched you, separate from your dream. Chorus: I’m here, you are there, we’re separate / The pain you feel I cannot fill / But hey, I love you, I can hold your hand. I woke to find you dreamin’ / You were poundin’ on a pillow / You were knockin’ on my door / You were callin’ my name, in a voice I never heard you use before. Chorus.

    Talkin’

We’re always talkin’, and then there’s talkin’ / Oh well, there’s a heart aching on me tonight / We’re always talkin’, not much walkin’ / You got talkin’ on your mind. Chorus: Is a song without words like a sky without birds / Or must we always dot the eye(*)? We should do this sometime, but not right now is the bottome line / There’s a story on the rise you have to tell once when you were 7 / While you keep talkin’, my interest’s droppin’ / Into the bucket at the bottom of the wishin’ well. Chorus. Just found some earplugs / You look at me like I’m on drugs(**) / Then you start into a line, explainin’ that you’re not talking all the time / Still you keep flappin’, while my heart’s crackin’ / Honey, talkin’ ain’t what we been lackin’. Chorus / Chorus / We’re always talkin’… (*) or “I” (**) coffee, booze, crack, grass, TV, asprin

    Dust

There is a place where we all begin / When it’s more than one that’s a walkin’ / Where is the foundation in the cloud we chase trust / Dust. Grab me a lifeline / Bag me a bird / Toss a coin in the air / Fair or unfair / Where is the foundation in the cloud we chase trust / Dust. Will the sun come out tomorrow / Will the wind choose to blow / Who can say anyway what is trust / Dust. Offer me some food / Will I save enough for you / Pull the blinds down down on the face / Stare into outer space / Where is the foundation in the cloud we chase trust / Dust.

    In the Round

You leave early in the morning, smelling like a rose, lookin’ like a million dollars / And when you get to the space, I feel that what takes place will fill your thoughts when you get home. Chorus: Look straight into her eyes, as she touches your thighs / Now without a sound undress her / I know you’re all pros and that’s how the story goes / In the round on the other side of town. I’m feeling selfishly alone when you call me on the phone / If the play’s the thing why does my heart keep pounding / What is it with this fear after a bourbon and a beer you might wish wasn’t here to come home to? Chorus. You leave early in the morning, smelling like a rose, lookin’ like a million dollars / And when you get to the space, I feel that what takes place will fill my thoughts when you get home. Chorus.

    Catch the Highway (UFOs)

Being for the city / Full of empty phrases / Matters of opinions / Hide and seek detentions / In my heart on suspicion / Tossed so many words in the air / Priviledged information / Can’t see it in the sky. Chorus: Catch the highway / Gonna search for UFOs / Gimme colored lights shinin’ on black roads / Hey Mr. Spaceman(*), are you looking for a dream / Take me away / Take me away. Resisting temptation of immediate gratification / Concrete dust horizon / Present situation / In my heart on suspicion / Tossed so many words in the air / Privileged information / Can’t see it in the sky. Chorus. Movin’ in a circle from where my foot is nailed to the ground / Spinning with grandfather’s clock, tick-toc, tick-toc time / Jackhammers on twisted wire / Compounded desire / Guardians of protection / Let me see the sky. Chorus / Take me away… (*) or woman, child, blender, anything

    Heat

Staring at the funny man I take my head from off my hand / Real is simulation / Emotional mutation / And blood is falling like sand / Feel the clock that ticks inside / Feed the mask that lives outside / Kill the foreign nations / Geographical frustrations / It’s just another suicide. Chorus: Live for the gold as though we’ll never grow old / Build ourselves a town and then we’ll watch it all come down / Live our lives as though we’ve never been told. Open the door out to the hall / Don’t get trapped inside the wall / Feel the radiation / Your final graduation from hate that reigns within us all / And follow light to where the little ones lay / Watch their faces disappear in the sky / It’s not your situation / National starvation / Don’t listen to all our children cry. Chorus. Don’t watch the jet streams in the sky / Keep your hands in front of your eyes / Don’t witness devastation / Worldwide desolation / Just feel the heat right before you die. Chorus.

    The Sound

Sometimes when you’re sleepin’ ya dream you hear a sound / You part your eyes, awaken, but there’s nothin’ to be found / The sound, it will not vanish / The dream, it lingers on / Ya hear a voice call out to you but ya know the voice is gone. Chorus: You sing aye aye aye aye aye / Ya ain’t born just to die / Nothin’ no nothin’ will ever come true if you’re livin’ a lie / Singin’ aye aye aye aye aye. You can let go in your head and still have a hopin’ heart / When ya think it’s finally over that’s when the tears start / Where did you go wrong / How did you miss that turn / Sometimes learnin’ from your mistakes is a little too late to learn. Chorus. Sittin’ in the basement watchin’ your life go by / You can’t think of anything that doesn’t make you cry / Convinced your life is over but it’s only just begun / If you can’t see through the night turn around and see the rising sun. Chorus…
